Ghostlight Theater Camp
Warwick, NY
US
Ghostlight Theater Camp is founded on the core values of joy, creativity, gratitude, and community. We operate two 3-week overnight camp sessions each summer, with all design staff and many campers participating in both sessions. In addition to these sessions, staff participate in training and development before campers’ arrival.
As Scenic Designer, you will join a group of enthusiastic artistic, leadership, and counseling staff in creating a summer of life-changing theater-making that sends campers home more independent, confident, and self-expressive. Designers live and work at Ghostlight Theater Camp’s campus at Mountain Lake Park in Warwick, New York, and are provided with room and board, along with access to a stunning natural environment that includes indoor theater spaces and expansive outdoor performance locations.
We are seeking a designer who can create spectacular, imaginative scenic designs using site-specific approaches, both indoors and outdoors. Using fabric, found/purchased objects, and a playful approach to design, the ideal candidate will create exciting, flexible theatrical spaces. The camp location does not have a woodshop or traditional lumber equipment.
Provide scenic design for up to 12 productions over the course of the summer.
Design scenic environments for both indoor theatrical spaces and outdoor, site-specific locations.
Teach one scenic design class per session.

Conceptualize and execute designs that are safe, durable, adaptable, and feasible, given limited technical infrastructure.
Direct or assist in the sourcing of materials, rental packages, found objects, and non-traditional scenic solutions.
Vet all designs against the specifications and limitations of Ghostlight’s facilities and available tools.
Assist in the build and installation of scenic elements. The camp location does not have a wood shop.
Participate in one design meeting for each show before arrival at camp.
Prepare and facilitate an orientation for production counselors during training, assessing skills possessed and skills needed.
Assist in the execution of overall camp operations by participating in evening activities and community events as available.
Attend Staff Orientation prior to the arrival of campers.
Attend daily staff meetings while at camp.
Maintain open, clear communication with leadership and camp owners (we are a community that believes in asking for help!).
