Job Title: General Manager
Compensation: $100,000 - $135,000/year, commensurate with experience, plus benefits.
Location: Astor Place Theater, New York, NY
Reports To: Managing Director, NG Astor LLC (or consultant acting on behalf of NG Astor LLC)
Position Overview
The General Manager is responsible for the oversight and continuous improvement of the day-today
operations of the Astor Place Theatre, ensuring seamless venue functionality, high-quality
patron experiences, and effective coordination across departments. This role will manage front-ofhouse
teams, collaborate closely with production and box office staff, and uphold safety and
compliance standards. The ideal candidate is looking to take ownership of the site and team, finding
ways to optimize the space and experience for guests and productions alike. This position is
envisioned as being onsite M-F during regular business hours, with occasional event-based needs
and/or support for the House Manager on-site during regularly scheduled performances.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Administration
• Coordinate with production, box office, and marketing teams to ensure smooth execution of
performances and events.
• Monitor plans for audience flow, crowd management, and accessibility services to
guarantee an excellent patron experience.
• Hire, onboard, supervise, and schedule front-of-house staff, including box office staff,
house management/usher teams, and facilities and cleaning crew. Manage direct reports
which include Head Treasurer, House Manager, and Facilities and Operations Coordinator.
• Provide training, performance evaluations, and ongoing leadership development.
• Foster a professional and inclusive team culture aligned with the theatre’s mission and
values.
• Support special theatre events and/or House Manager on site as needed.
Venue & Facilities Management
• Ensure the theatre is maintained in top operational condition, including
cleanliness, maintenance, and readiness for performances.
• Manage relationships with vendors, contractors, and service providers (e.g.,
cleaning, concessions, HVAC, security, maintenance).
• Oversee building safety, emergency preparedness, and code compliance
(FDNY, ADA, DOH, etc.).
Financial Oversight & Reporting
• Assist with operations budget planning and monitor expenses for building services,
supplies, and staffing.
• Maintain inventory and manage procurement of venue-related materials and supplies in
consultation with facilities team and vendors.
• Prepare operations reports, including incident logs, maintenance schedules, and staffing
metrics.
• Coordinate with Facilities Manager to complete weekly settlements and operational charge
backs in accordance with all agreements.
Other Responsibilities
• Position may require work outside of normal business hours to accommodate the demands of a
theatrical venue, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Additional duties as needed or directed.
Qualifications
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in theatre, live event, or venue operations management,
including direct supervision of a team.
• Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate diverse positions (i.e., front-of-house, box office,
facilities) in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment. This includes demonstrated experience with
conflict resolution and addressing disciplinary issues when necessary.
• Familiarity with building systems (e.g., HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life, general theatre
safety), and expertise in venue facility oversight, including managing maintenance, repairs and
vendor contracts.
• Experience with budgets, expense tracking, and generating operational reports (e.g., settlements,
etc.)
• Knowledge of local and federal safety codes, including ADA accessibility requirements and
FDNY/Building Code compliance in NYC.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and calmly with others.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft professional
correspondence and clearly articulate policies and procedures.
• A proactive, problem-solving mindset and the demonstrated ability to work independently.
• Successful applicant must have, or will need to obtain FDNY certificates of fitness, including F-03
(Indoor Place of Assembly), F-07 (Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor), and S-95
(Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems) certificates as a condition of employment, with certificate
fees to be covered by NG Astor LLC.
