Theatre Aspen, the award-winning professional theatre company located in the heart of the Colorado mountains, is accepting applications for an Education & Cabaret Technical Director to join our summer staff. Situated in one the most unique destinations in the world, Theatre Aspen is the region’s most celebrated theatrical institution and has been a fixture of the community for over forty years, attracting a long litany of renowned performers.
The Education & Cabaret Technical lead plays a vital role in overseeing all technical elements of Theatre Aspen’s summer educational & cabaret programming. Over the summer, the Education department produces 2-3 shows. In addition, we have 4-6 cabarets. This role is responsible for supervising the Education/Cabaret Sound Design & Lighting Design apprentices. This person is also responsible for the design and construction of all Education shows throughout the summer. Throughout the summer, the Education & Cabaret Technical Director collaborates with the Production Manager and Co-Directors of Education to plan, manage, and execute their assigned events.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· - Collaborate with the Co-Directors of Education, guest designers, and teaching artists to create a positive production process.
· -Serve as the scenic designer and lead carpenter for all summer education shows.
· -Attend all education production meetings, technical rehearsals, and shows as needed.
· -Supervise the Education & Cabaret Lighting Design Apprentice and the Education & Cabaret Sound Design Apprentice, including delegating tasks and managing their work schedules as appropriate, and mentor both apprentices throughout the summer.
· -Collaborate with all cabaret creatives to ensure needs are met for each show.
· -Assist with cabarets by leading load in and load out along with supporting the apprentices with lighting and sound.
· -Ensure clear and consistent communication with the Production Manager and Co-Directors of Education.
· -Maintain department budgets and inventory levels throughout the summer.
· -Assist with mainstage productions and changeovers as requested.
· -Assist with education productions as requested, including training backstage crew on set operations. May be required to work backstage on performances as member of run crew as needed.
· -Serve as a site supervisor on a rotating schedule with other department heads.
Qualifications:
· -Two years as a Technical Director or ATD, or related experience required.
· -Experience with scenic design and scenic construction. Basic understanding of audio engineering and lighting equipment.
· -Valid Driver’s License and comfortable driving a cargo van or box truck as needed.
· -Experience supervising a team or coordinating work schedules based on production needs.
· -Excellent time management skills.
· -Strong communication and collaboration skills.
· - Previous theatrical technical experience required; previous production management experience a plus.
· - Ability to work at various heights from ladders, aerial work platforms, scaffolding, and other high reach surfaces comfortably.
· -Positive, professional demeanor, and ability to work as part of a team.
· -Willingness to learn, adapt, and grow skills along with career
· -Full-time availability for a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
· -Able to work in a physically demanding role that requires lifting to 50 lbs. as well as frequent climbing, squatting, and standing for long durations of time
· -Comfortable working outdoors
· -Experience setting up, installing, and troubleshooting technology for productions or events
· -Troubleshoot and repair show operation equipment
· -Knowledge of theatrical terminology and interpreting documentation
-This position will help supervise Theatre Aspen Apprentices, mentoring and training emerging talent within the field. The willingness to collaborate, instruct and provide guidance is an essential requirement.
Dates: June 1, 2026 – August 16, 2026
Pay: $700 per week with housing and travel provided
