POSITION SUMMARY

Geffen Playhouse seeks a Director of Production to coordinate, supervise, and manage planning, scheduling, budgeting, contracting and execution of all aspects of physical productions including scenery, lights, costumes, props, paint, sound, and projections for 6-8 fully produced season productions in addition to a slate of projects in development and special events.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Drive production excellence by overseeing scheduling, facilitating productive meetings, coordinating with vendors and contractors, and ensuring clear communication and implementation of production plans.

· Maintain a proactive approach by continually monitoring production progress across all areas, ensuring timely identification of potential issues; allowing for adjustments to guarantee readiness for technical rehearsals.

· Foster clear and collaborative communication across departments and creative artists throughout the production lifecycle.

· Develop and implement solutions to address space constraints, ensure safety compliance, and drive continuous improvement in production processes and performance.

· Provide leadership and direction for the production department, encompassing recruitment, supervision, performance management, and professional development of production department supervisors, technical staff, stage managers, and temporary personnel.

· Cultivate a thriving production environment by supporting, empowering, and motivating the production staff.

· Work with Technical Directors to foster, develop and implement a comprehensive safety compliance program.

· Collaborate with the General Manager on vendor, production staff, and artist contract negotiations.

· Contribute to collaborative season planning initiatives.

· Work alongside the Producer to develop a selection process for recommending designers and stage managers, ensuring a strong artistic fit and production expertise for each show.

· Maintain a deep understanding of theatrical union agreements, including LORT CBAs with AEA, USA, and SDC. Act as a production liaison to interpret these agreements and facilitate communication with the unions.

· Partner with the Development Department and Director of Operations to identify technical needs and requirements for special events, including the annual Backstage at the Geffen fundraiser.

· Work alongside the Producer throughout the production lifecycle, contributing to the creation, execution, and oversight of production budgets.

· Provide the CFO with regular departmental financial reports, including proactive notification of potential budget overages.

· Work with Artistic & Production Administrator on payroll and show budget tracking.

· Carry out other duties as requested by the Artistic Director or Executive Director.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/KNOWLEDGE

Be able to keep a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours, to accommodate production needs.

Evening and weekend hours are mandatory during technical rehearsals and previews.

SKILLS AND BACKGROUND

· Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Production Management, or a related field (required).

· Master's degree in Theatre, Production Management, or a related field (preferred).

· 3-5 years of experience in production management for theatrical productions (required).

· Thorough understanding of all aspects of theatrical production, with a strong focus on technical design and technology.

· Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and modifying technical drawings, plots, and plans for scenic, sound, and lighting designs in Vectorworks and AutoCAD (required).

· Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and production-specific software (e.g., scheduling, budgeting applications).

· Ability to identify and resolve problems efficiently, gathering and analyzing information skillfully.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in group problem-solving situations.

· Diplomatic and strong leadership skills to manage personnel and work effectively with individuals of varying experience levels.

· Demonstrates creative problem-solving skills and progressive personnel management techniques.

· Thrives in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining composure and focus.

COMPENSATION

Salary Range: $100,000 - $110,000
