DESCRIPTION

ABOUT THE FLYNN

The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts is Vermont’s creative heartbeat — a statewide organization that brings communities together through live performance, public programs, and shared cultural experiences.

Based in Burlington, the Flynn works across theaters, schools, public spaces, and communities throughout Vermont. Through festivals, commissions, education programs, and partnerships, the Flynn emphasizes artistic excellence, access, and relevance — creating experiences that are rooted in place, responsive to community, and alive in the moment.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Creative Learning is a senior leader who sits at the intersection of artistic practice, education, and community partnership. This role starts from the communities the Flynn serves and thinks creatively about how learning happens — designing programs, partnerships, and pathways that invite participation, deepen understanding, and expand access to the arts.

The Director of Creative Learning shapes and advances Creative Learning as a core content function of the organization. The role oversees the Flynn’s Creative Learning portfolio, including workshops, classes, residencies, school partnerships, and summer camps, while also helping shape how learning is embedded across the organization’s artistic and public work. This position blends strategic thinking and hands-on program creation, balancing the development of new ideas with the stewardship and growth of established programs.

The Director of Creative Learning is also responsible for defining, tracking, and communicating program goals, outcomes, and key performance indicators (KPIs) that demonstrate impact, inform learning, and support organizational and funder reporting.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Creative Learning Strategy & Program Ownership

  • Lead the strategy, design, and implementation of the Flynn’s Creative Learning programs, grounded in community need and artistic practice.
  • Design, pilot, sustain, and scale a portfolio of learning experiences, including workshops, classes, residencies, school-based programs, and summer camps.
  • Ensure Creative Learning programs advance the Flynn’s values of artistic excellence, access, relevance, and inclusion.
  • Develop learning frameworks that prioritize participation, dialogue, creative agency, and meaningful exchange.

  • Serve as a visible representative of the Flynn in education and community learning spaces, as appropriate.

Artistic & Organizational Collaboration

  • Partner with the Director of Programming to connect Creative Learning initiatives to performances, festivals, commissions, and curated artistic work.
  • Initiate learning-centered projects that may require producing support and collaborate with the Producer and Operations teams to realize these projects with care for artists, learners, and communities.
  • Collaborate on produced projects initiated elsewhere in the organization, ensuring learning goals and participation opportunities are thoughtfully integrated.
  • Contribute to organization-wide thinking about access, participation, and audience engagement through a creative learning lens.

Evaluation, Data & Learning Outcomes

  • Define program goals, learning outcomes, and key performance indicators (KPIs) for Creative Learning programs, in alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret quantitative and qualitative data related to participation, access, engagement, and impact.
  • Use evaluation findings to refine programs, strengthen practice, and inform future planning.
  • Ensure accurate and timely entry, management, and oversight of Creative Learning program data within the Flynn’s CRM system (Tessitura), including participant information, program activity, and learning outcomes.
  • Ensure data collection practices are thoughtful, equitable, and appropriate to community-based and participatory work.

Staff Leadership & Program Management

  • Supervise teaching artists and program contractors.
  • Support curriculum development, scheduling, and program logistics in collaboration with Operations and Producing.
  • Oversee Creative Learning program budgets and planning in coordination with the Executive Director and Finance.
