ABOUT THE HELEN HAYES YOUTH THEATRE

For over 25 years, the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre has committed itself to providing a safe space where young performers can be themselves and learn the craft of theater in a creative, safe, and supportive environment. Although we take great pride in the quality of our productions, it is the process that our students undergo—the learning, the community building, and the fun they have—that gives us the deepest satisfaction, and that has made the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of theater education in America.

WORKING WITH US

Our teaching artists are the foundation of our program and our success, and our administrative team works hard to give them the creative space, support, compensation, and other tools they need to get their jobs done at the highest level. The environment we foster, both for our students and our team, is collaborative, creative, warm, and above all, mutually supportive. Encouraging flexibility and room for growth from everyone who works with us is paramount to our mission as a company.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working closely with our producer, designers, management, technical team, fellow creatives, and most importantly, our student performers, to launch full-length musicals, workshops, and cabaret shows from start to finish.

  • Holding auditions and casting productions.

  • Collaborating with various designers and producers to ensure that production elements fulfill the creative vision and stay within budget.

  • Running tech week (with the help of the stage manager and producer).

  • Establishing a fun, positive, and nurturing learning environment where student performers feel safe, supported, and artistically engaged.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2+ years of directing/choreographing/musical directing experience (can include academic experience).

  • Experience working with children.

  • Experience within the realm of educational theater is a major plus, but not required.

  • A genuine love and excitement for working with children.

  • The ability to travel to Nyack, NY (about 45 minutes outside of NYC and accessible by public transit).

To apply, please submit your resume, reel and a brief cover letter to [email protected].
