DESCRIPTION
Geva Theatre, a LORT B regional theatre in the heart of Rochester, New York, seeks an experienced and collaborative Costume Shop Supervisor to join its production team.
The Costume Shop Supervisor leads the costume shop in supporting the director’s and designer’s vision related to the construction and procurement of all costumes within the allotted timeframe, budget, and scope of staff capacity and resources. Also responsible for managing costume shop employees and maintaining Geva’s core values of artistic courage, sustainability, excellence, boundless hospitality, empathy, and anti-racism and inclusion.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Supervision
- Lead, manage and supervise the costume shop staff: Cutter/Draper, First Hand, and Costume Shop Assistant; as well as the Wardrobe Supervisor, Wig Supervisor, and any necessary craftspeople and overhire.
- Actively participate in regular team building, fostering a work environment of artistic excellence, community, equity, diversity, inclusion, and financial responsibility.
Collaboration & Support with Design Teams
- Collaborate with the design team and other production departments to establish methods for the design, construction procurement or rental of all costume elements of Geva productions.
- Consult with designers and production department members on any issues that arise during the production process which pertain any areas of responsibility
Manage Costume Fitting & Construction Process
- Prepare, organize, and communicate the design information so that shop employees in a timely, safe, and resource efficient manner can build costumes.
- With Production Manager, review/revise budget estimates for each production by tracking all relevant information through the financial reconciliation and ensuring these requests match the allocated budget and resource.
- In collaboration with designers and design assistants, monitor the design progress of all costume elements based on the designer drawings and information so they can be built by the shop staff or vendors on time and within the allocated budget.
Shop Maintenance
- In collaboration with costume shop staff, monitor tool/supply needs and ensure materials are purchased in a timely and resource efficient manner, and correctly allocated to various budgets.
- Work with Production Manager and Facilities Manager to maintain an inventory of materials and a safe working environment for the shop employees so they may work safely and efficiently.
Administration
- Work with Production Manager to manage budget to ensure effective use of financial and personnel resources.
- Project expenses and manage expenses on a per-show basis.
- Analyze and monitor production and costume shop budgets.
- Work collaboratively with other departments to determine and implement archival systems about each production for future reference.
DESIRED TRAITS IN A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a professional Costume Shop.
- Experience, ability and commitment to working with diverse groups in terms of gender expression, race, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, class and immigrant status.
- Knowledge of costume and fashion history to make informed evaluations of designs for productions.
- Knowledge of sewing, patterning, and tailoring techniques to advise and evaluate staff
- Knowledge of money management and computer spreadsheet formats to effectively budget and manage financial resources.
- Knowledge of theater literature and history to make informed suggestions and evaluations during budgeting and production.
- Knowledge of leadership and management principles.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects to assist staff in using time effectively.
- Ability to exercise professional diplomacy in personnel and design management.
- Ability to understand other theater departments and the relationship of the costume shop to them.
- Capacity to solve problems and engage in creative thinking about challenges
- Knowledge of current best health and safety practice within the US Theatre Industry
- Exhibit empathy, kindness, diplomacy, and humor in the workplace.

Salary and benefits ranging from $22.00-$24.00 per hour.
