DESCRIPTION

Shakespeare in the Woods (SitW) is seeking a Costume Designer with a collaborative spirit, for our 2024 repertory season of Macbeth and Twelfth Night, or What You Will. This 4th season is about the push & pull of dichotomy, and seeks to explore the spectrum of gender, desire & jealousy, authenticity & illusion, belief & fate, and more!

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until 11:59pm EST on Friday April 26th, 2024. Those interested should contact Producing Artistic Director Katharine Maness (they/them), at [email protected] . After we review your application, there will be a follow up virtual interview with production team members.

For consideration, please submit your design resume along with a cover letter that shares the following:
- What interests you about working with SitW
- A bit about yourself and design background, especially any outdoor production experience you may have
- Two references (please provide names, relationships, and email addresses)
- Anything else you’d like to include!

SitW approaches production design with eco-theatre practices, meaning a low to zero waste model supported by repurposing and reinventing pieces from our existing collection, thrifting/second hand purchases, and borrowing from other theatres’ inventory when possible, before acquiring new purchases. In certain instances we will ask actors if they are comfortable providing pieces depending on what the costume designer is looking for. We seek to use all design elements as efficiently as possible within the budgetary resources at our disposal, and maintain a low footprint in the process.

Our creative practices stem from being an artist led company that’s passionate about imagining what is possible outside of conventional industry structures. As such, we are seeking collaborators who share this passion to join the creative team. We encourage you to review our website’s ‘Work With Us’ section for further information on our approach to creative culture, and also please note that SitW is very excited to be newly working with Theatre Advocacy Project (TAP) this season, which will include specific creative team and company wide training and workshop sessions.

Contract Details:
$1,250 for duration

There will be a few virtual production team meetings occurring in May-June prior to the start of rehearsals. Rehearsals begin virtually on July 8th, and will include a whole company meet in the day’s schedule. This will be the time to share an initial costume presentation with the casts.

Duration of being on location in VT is August 8th - 16th (last 2 reg. rehearsals & tech week) to then have the option to stay for previews on 17-18th, if you’d like. Housing and roundtrip transportation to/from VT will be provided.

Previews August 17-18th

Repertory Performance Schedule: August 21st - September 8th (Weds-Sun shows)

Shakespeare in the Woods (SitW) is an outdoor theatre company experimenting with the Bard's canon through radical approach, based in Manchester, VT. Each production seeks to deliver a professional caliber celebration of classical text through an unconventional, modern, and socially aware lens, all while embracing Vermont’s natural offerings. The intention behind every production is to meet the natural landscape with respect, and to mindfully work in collaboration with nature versus imposing upon it.
