PENNY LOCAL
by Lindsay Timmington
Directed by Adam R. Adam Prado-Deremer

In the heart of Sunnyside, where the skyline rises ever higher, a diverse group of lifelong residents faces the impending tides of change. As their neighborhood transforms, they grapple with memories of a vibrant past while confronting the uncertainties of an evolving future.

As the locals are faced with the arrival of newcomers, the invisibility that often accompanies growing older is exposed, and the locals must decide what they’re willing to fight for and what they’re ready to let go. “Penny Local” captures the essence of a neighborhood on the brink, explores the complexities of aging and identity, and celebrates the resilience of the vibrant borough of Queens in the face of inevitable change.

Performance Dates:
Sunday December 8, 2pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, Sunnyside
Sunday December 8, 7pm at Maggie Mae's Bar, Sunnyside
Monday December 9, 7pm at Maggie Mae's Bar, Sunnyside

Tuesday, December 3rd from 6-9 PM @ Maggie Mae's
Thursday, December 5th from 6-9 PM @ Maggie Mae's

Characters:
PENNY: Of an elder age. (60+) Female identifying. A Sunnyside mainstay—the person you see often in the same places at the same time every day, but you don’t talk to her and forget about her once you pass her on the street. Coarse, honest, stubborn, and has no interest in change. Trust doesn’t come easy with her, but when it is earned, she’ll probably keep it to herself until what she decides is the right moment.

SAINT PATRICK: Of a less-elder age. Male Identifying. Immigrated from Ireland as a young man. Has only ever known Sunnyside as home. A true softy and peace-maker. He’s never fully healed from losing his wife and misses her every day. Loyal, thoughtful, and will always try to make you see the other side. The kind of guy that will start a chat with you at the bar that ends up being a beautiful conversation.

NASA HOLLYWOOD: Of an older age. (60+) Male identifying. Lifelong Sunnysider. Wanted to get out as a young man, but didn’t make it. At first glance, he’s the grumpy old guy with a sharp tongue and doesn’t care whatsoever about being polite or respectful. But once you get to know him, the more he picks on you, the more he likes you. He’s opinionated and stuck in another time (because it’s where he was happiest).

DOLL: Early Mid-life. Gender fluid or female-identifying. Has lived in Sunnyside for a decade. Former teacher, now the new bartender at the local pub. A keeper of stories. Doesn’t like attention. Tends to blend in rather than stand out. Strong, adaptable, and is a bridge between generations.

(ROLE FILLED) AINSLEY: New adult. Female identifying. Eager for approval. An influencer and new to Sunnyside, which she had never heard of until it started trending on social media as an “upcoming” neighborhood. Her whole life is on her phone and how she is perceived by her followers. She sees the good in people, even if it’s difficult. Bubbly, progressive, and observant. She wants more in her life, but perhaps isn’t quite sure what that is, yet.

TOPHER: New adult. Male identifying. Moved to Sunnyside...like yesterday. Nepo baby. The young real estate mogul. He has very little use for the old and what he labels as “outdated”. Searching for the quickest way to turn a profit and make something new and relevant. He’s sharp, judgmental, and impatient, but Ainsley sees something in him that everyone else doesn’t. Feels the urge to prove something to the world, especially mom.
