Equity actors for roles in Axelrod Performing Arts Center's 2025 Season (see breakdown).

Some roles will be understudied. Local Central NJ/Deal Park NJ actors are encouraged to audition.


PREPARATION

Please prepare a brief singing selection (about a minute long) in the style of any show in the season, and/or a brief monologue for consideration for Steel Magnolias. Bring sheet music in your key, an accompanist will be provided. Please bring a picture/resume, stapled together.

[CAROLE KING] CAST Female, 20s. Ages from 16-29 throughout the show. An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good natured, unassuming and often the peace maker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music. A powerful, distinctive voice.

[GERRY GOFFIN] Male, 20s. Ages from late teens to late 20s throughout the show. Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. He is smoldering, dark & handsome with a rebel vibe. Although sexy, he is innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more. Sings well. Baritone/tenor.

[CYNTHIA WEIL] Female, 20s. Ages from late teens to late 20s throughout the show. A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart & chic with a quick wit. Although self-confident and sarcastic, she is also extremely likeable. Strong comic timing who sings extremely well. Belt.

[BARRY MANN] Male, 20s, ages from late teens to late 20s throughout the show. A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. He is good natured, appealing & neurotic. Ambitious, but likeable. Comedic with a great voice. A strong high tenor comfortable with pop & rock style singing.

[DON KIRSCHNER] Male, mid-30s- late 40s. An influential music publisher and producer. He is a fast talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker.

[GENIE] Female. 40s-50s. Carole’s Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes.

[MALE ENSEMBLE #1] 20s-30s; White; Tenor. Doubles as multiple Ensemble role(s) including Neil Sedaka, Lou Adler, Bobby Vee and a Righteous Brother. Ensemble.

[MALE ENSEMBLE #2] 20s-30s; White; Baritone. Doubles as the role(s) of Nick and a Righteous Brother. Ensemble.

[MALE ENSEMBLE #3 - #6/DRIFTERS (4)] 20s-30s; Black, Member of the doo-wop group The Drifters. Ensemble. Two bari/tenors and two tenors, with falsetto capabilities.

[JANELLE WOODS/SHIRELLE/ENSEMBLE] – Female, 20s-30s, Black. A pop singer, notably performing the hit “One Fine Day.” An artist whom Carole and Gerry write music for. Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show. Strong movement.

[LITTLE EVA/SHIRELLE/ENSEMBLE] - Female, 18-30, Black. Alto w/ High Extension, A pop singer who begins working as a babysitter/nanny for Carole and Gerry’s daughter Has charm, charisma and strong movement and vocal ability. Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show. Strong movement.

[LUCILLE/SHIRELLE/ENSEMBLE] – Female, 20s-30s, Alto w/ High Extension, Donnie’s secretary. Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show. Strong movement.

[UPTOWN SOLOIST/SHIRELLE/ENSEMBLE] – Female, 20s-30s, Black. Alto w/ High Extension, featured moment singing the song “Uptown.” Non-speaking. Strong movement.

[SHERRIE] female, 20s, any ethnicity/race. Sherrie has left her Midwestern family to pursue stardom in Los Angeles. She is innocent and naive with great comedic timing. Has strong rock vocals and is a terrific mover.

[LONNY/RECORD COMPANY MAN] male, 30s, any ethnicity/race. Has very strong comedic timing and a commanding but comically strong rock vocal. Our narrator.

[STACEE JAXX/FATHER] male, 20s-30s, any ethnicity/race. Sexy, a rock star. He is at the top of his game and just left his very successful metal rock band to venture out on his own. He has very strong comedic timing and a strong rock voice. Arrogant and charming, his life is a merry-go-round of good old sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. Doubles as Sherrie’s father.

[DENNIS DUPREE/RECORD COMPANY MAN] male, 40s, any ethnicity/race. Possibly heavyset. Has strong comedic timing. Any ethnicity. He runs the famous Rock of Ages club on the Sunset Strip. He is caught between a rock and a hard place when German businessmen pressure him to sell his club.

[JA'KEITH/MAYOR/ENSEMBLE] male, 20s-30s, Black. [JA'KEITH] Ja’Keith becomes Drew’s agent and in the process, destroys Drew’s rock star dreams by forcing Drew to join a band. [MAYOR] The Mayor chooses money over music and is more than willing to sell himself and his city out to the highest bidder.

[HERTZ KLINEMANN] male, 40-60, any ethnicity/race. an uptight, German businessman (must have good German accent) who is looking to take over the Sunset Strip. He is the villain with a commanding presence with strong comedic timing and vocals.

[JUSTICE CHARLIER/MOTHER] female, late 20s to 40s, Black. a commanding woman who runs the strip club where Sherrie ends up when the going gets rough. She is sultry, maternal and a sexy madam with strong vocals and belt. Doubles as Sherrie’s mother.

[DREW] male, 20s, any ethnicity/race. a young, handsome rocker. He has great comedic timing and a strong rock tenor. Drew desperately wants to be a rocker, but works as a bar back at the famous Rock of Ages club on the Sunset Strip until his dreams, however unrealistic, come true.

[REGINA] female, 20s, any ethnicity/race. A granola girl, who has strong comedic timing. She is a hilarious, tree-hugging fighter who will stop at nothing to protect the Sunset Strip. Is a strong singer.

[FRANZ KLINEMANN] male, 20s, any ethnicity/race. a foppish German who is pressured by his father to work for his business. Has a strong German accent. He is small, and shy. Has good vocals and strong comedic timing.

[MALE ENSEMBLE] male, 20s-30s, any ethnicity/race. Extremely strong singer/dancers. To play a variety of roles including: Reporter, Sleazy Producer, Joey Primo, Strip Club DJ (Live Offstage). Ensemble performers will also potentially cover a principal role.

SEEKING:

[HEDWIG] CAST 20s-40s. A ‘slip of a girly boy from Communist East Berlin’ turned lead singer and musical genius of the punk rock band ‘The Angry Inch’, on a revenge tour across the nation. Born Hansel Schmidt, Hedwig underwent a botched sex change operation to escape Berlin. A force of nature, Hedwig is equal parts rock goddess, stand-up comedian, cosmic philosopher, and vulnerable human being. Americanized German accent. Includes masculine and feminine presentations.

[YITZHAK] non-binary, 20s-40s. Hedwig’s husband and roadie/back-up singer. A former drag queen who married Hedwig to leave Zagreb. Devoted, loyal, loving, and perhaps more talented than Hedwig - a possibility that causes much strain in their relationship. Bound by the constraints of traditional masculinity, but longs to explore a more feminine side. Unafraid of rebellion in small, controlled doses. Croatian accent.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS

[CLAIREE BELCHER] female, 60s, any ethnicity/race. Widow of the former mayor. Clairee is a grand dame with a wicked sense of humor.

[M’LYNN EATENTON] female, 50s, any ethnicity/race. Shelby’s mother. M’Lynn is a loving, at times overprotective, stubborn woman who is certain she knows what’s best. She puts on a tough front to hide her internal fragility and fear.

[ANNELLE DUPUY-DESOTO] female, 20s, any ethnicity/race. Truvy’s new assistant. Meek and sweet, Annelle has experienced more than she lets on. Throughout the course of the play, Annelle finds herself through religion.

[SHELBY EATENTON-LATCHERIE] female, 20s, any ethnicity/race. “Prettiest girl in town.” Shelby is almost childlike - she loves pink, she is full of youthful joie de vivre, and she is deeply passionate.

[OUISER BOUDREAUX] female, 50s-60s, any ethnicity/race. Wealthy curmudgeon. Acerbic but loveable. Ouiser is perceived by others as a bitter woman who cares only for her dog and her property.
