Synopsis

Raised by a she-bear in the Arcadian forest after being abandoned because of her sex, Atalanta has only ever experienced connection with the wildness of the natural world surrounding her. Upon her eighteenth birthday and prompted by the patronage of the goddess Artemis, she returns to Grecian society on a quest to discover the life that could have been hers. An exquisite hunter and runner, she is a staggering anomaly within her own culture and struggles with understanding herself and her fellow Greeks. Will she claim the life she lost or will she fail at being human, after all?

Atlanta: The Long Shot is a completely new musical in every sense of the word, combining elements of vaudeville, electronica, rock, and even Greek tragedy to create a world of its own. The elements of this piece take direct inspiration from the character of Atalanta: someone who is marvelously different. Exploring the complexities of an intimate relationship between a non-male hero and a goddess, themes of familial responsibility and ownership, and the exciting conflict of heroic battles to the death; this show offers us a new way to understand what it means to be human. Truly a hero like no other, Atalanta’s story warns us how ugly society can be when women run too fast.

Roles needed

Atalanta

Range: F2-D4 belt

Atalanta spent her formative years completely isolated from society. When she is introduced to civilization she experiences what it's like to suddenly have her perceived gender affect her opportunity, her autonomy, her ability to relate to others, and her expression. Atalanta is one of the strongest non-male characters in Greek mythology as her desires and abilities exist outside the realm of societal expectation. When confronted with biases, underestimation, and imposed patriarchal control, she responds the only way she knows how: humble defiance.

Atalanta has a physically strong presence with a wild nature expressed in sensuality. She is serious, intense, and literal with a dry sense of humor. Deeply inspired by animals and nature, she is disgusted by society’s greed and carelessness toward the natural world. She has a complex and romantic relationship with the goddess Artemis that is difficult to define, especially when explored within the context of their core differences. LGBTQ+ and TNBGNC individuals are encouraged to apply.

Artemis

Range: F2-D4 belt

Artemis is the Greek goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, and nature. Unlike other gods in the pantheon, she is more content hunting in the forest than meddling in human affairs, and is often seen racing through the woods with packs of nymphs and Amazons. This “virgin” [meaning, unmarried] goddess of the moon embodies the wild feminine and often represents the untamed woman to grecian society. She has a complex and romantic relationship with Atalanta that is difficult to define, especially when explored within the context of their core differences.

Artemis sees Atalanta as a rare opportunity to become her hero, something she desires to have just like many of the other gods. Artemis is awed by Atalanta’s abilities and convinces her to enter into society and prove herself a hero among the grecian people. Part advisor, part lover, part confidante, and all goddess; Artemis embodies the seductive power that Greek immortals can have over their mortal subjects. LGBTQ+ and TNBGNC individuals are encouraged to apply.

The language of the show is in verse, and the music follows atypical structures and heavy chromaticism. Those with experience performing Shakespeare are highly encouraged to apply. Must be able to read music.
