DESCRIPTION

We seek company members who are ready and willing to bring a positive and collaborative attitude to the uniquely challenging process of outdoor rotating repertory theatre. ISF is committed to intersectional inclusion and representation, and we are actively working to dismantle systems of oppression in our organization and the work we share. We seek to build an ensemble who will embrace and enhance these values.

🎭 Our 2026 season includes William Shakespeare's Macbeth, directed by Jackie Apodaca (she/her), and Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest, a new play by Erin Murray, directed by Aili Huber (she/her).

🏝️ About ISF: ISF is a Pay-What-You-Will company located on rural Whidbey Island, north of Seattle. Whidbey is the ancestral home of Coast Salish peoples including the Swinomish, Snohomish, Suquamish, and Lower Skagit tribes, who were forcibly relocated with the 1855 Treaty of Point Elliott.

🤑 Housing and Pay: Visiting artistic collaborators are housed locally in home-stays. Visiting actors will be cast in both productions unless otherwise arranged.
  • AEA contracts are ITC/SPT tier 6
  • Non-union rate: $490 per week
  • Term of contract: June 5-September 7, 2026
  • Up to $250 travel reimbursement for visiting non-union artists
✅ Submitting: Please fill out the form below and include a YouTube or Vimeo link to your video. Your video should include:
  • Slate with your name, pronouns, piece(s)
  • One short classical verse monologue (under 60 seconds)
  • One fun fact about yourself - Optional prompt: What's bringing you joy these days?
  • Optional: 16 bars (a Cappella, self-accompanied, or instrument-only). This is truly optional; not all roles are singing roles, but if music is part of your artistic expression, we’d love to see it.
Please submit only one form. If you have edits/corrections/updates after you've submitted, please send them to [email protected].
Please submit videos by 11:59 PM PST January 31, 2025. Callbacks (with assigned sides from the plays) will be held via video and zoom with limited in-person appointments through February and March. We will contact you before casting is publicly announced, whether we have roles to offer you or not.
🎥 Tips for video: (these are suggestions, not requirements!)
  • Shoot horizontal rather than vertical
  • Find a neutral background
  • Check your lighting - we'd love to see your expressive face!
  • Aim for your torso to be included (avoid extreme close-up)
  • Don't look at the camera--keep your focus just above or to the side
  • No dialects or "Shakespeare Voice" necessary
  • Even though it's video, don't be afraid to use your body and voice - we're looking for you how you'll fill our outdoor space
  • We aren't opposed to pet video-bombs 😻
If you are unable to submit a video, please indicate so below and we will make alternative arrangements.
Our Casting Ethos:

We believe classic theatre belongs to everyone, and we strive for inclusion and representation across the full scope of humanity in both our audiences and company. We acknowledge that the Western classical canon was written through a narrow cultural lens, but we believe the humanity in these plays transcends those limitations. We seek to define space in these stories for the richness of who we are today, and we work to expand familiarity with global classical voices historically excluded.

Gender Representation
Most characters in the classical canon are written with he/him or she/her pronouns. We invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and nonbinary actors to submit for all roles which ignite their creative spirit. We will specify when directors or playwrights have determined gender-specific criteria.
To support this value, our form includes an optional question about character genders you prefer not to be considered for.

In alignment with our commitment to inclusive and authentic representation, we do not cast cis actors in transgender or nonbinary roles.

Race & Ethnicity
We welcome actors of all racial and ethnic identities to submit for roles that ignite their creative spirit. We will note any character-specific criteria when applicable.

Disability & Ability
We welcome actors who identify as differently abled and/or disabled to submit for all roles which ignite their creative spirit. Any ability-specific requirements will be noted.

Body Diversity
We welcome actors of all body shapes and sizes. Any physical criteria will be clearly noted.

Age
We welcome actors of all ages and life stages—from emerging artists to seasoned performers. Shakespeare’s worlds thrive on intergenerational ensembles, and we believe age diversity deepens empathy, perspective, and connection onstage. We’ll make clear any roles where the director or playwright has specific age considerations.

If you have questions, concerns, or accommodation needs, please let us know.

Inspired by language developed by Kevin Kantor (they/them) and Emily Tarquin (they/them), adapted for our casting process by Olena Hodges (she/her) with contributions from Kyle Haden (he/him), Ada Karamanyan (she/her), Mickey Rowe (he/him), K. Woodzick (they/them), and others.
