The Heights Players
Brooklyn, NY
US
by Sarah DeLappe
Directed by Dorea Slagle
Synopsis: Left quad. Right quad. Lunge. A high school girls indoor soccer team warms up. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wage tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. They’re close, they look out for each other. As the teammates warm up in sync, a symphony of overlapping dialogue spills out their concerns. By season’s and play’s end, amidst the wins and losses, rivalries and tragedies, they are tested - and they are ready. They are The Wolves.
A beautiful, sophisticated play, The Wolves presents a season in the lives of these young women. We see their anxieties, hear their secrets, watch them resolve their petty squabbles and deeper divisions. In a world where we rarely get to explore the relationship of just women, alone on stage together, this play truly is an exceptional window into the physical and emotional struggles of female adolescence.
90 minutes, no intermission.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Seeking Female and/or Female-Identifying performers for the following roles.
We will also be casting a minimum of 2 swings for this show, to cover the 9 tracks of the soccer players. Each swing will be guaranteed one performance, in the track of their choosing. Actors with soccer experience will be prioritized for the swing tracks.
#00 – Goalie
The team’s goalie. High achiever. She is intense, tightly wound, and rarely speaks. Isolated from the group, she often warms up alone. There is a depth of anxiety and vulnerability beneath her silence.
#2 – Defense
A bit of a follower, trying hard to be liked. Innocent and naive, but sweet. She's close friends with #8. Often cheerful and eager to be part of the conversation, even if she doesn’t always understand it. TW: Please note that this character struggles with an eating disorder, and the actor will need to be comfortable representing those themes on stage.
#7 – Striker / Defense
She has an air of confidence, and is viewed as “cool”. Sarcastic, blunt, confrontational, and sometimes cruel, but also funny and charismatic. She could be seen as a “mean girl” only, but there are stronger underlying layers to motivate her actions. She is an excellent soccer player, but is injured late in the season. Tough.
#8 – Defense
The class clown and peacemaker. She’s goofy, energetic, and loves to make others laugh. Best friends with #2. She maintains a childlike view of the world - optimistic.
#11 – Midfield
Intelligent, thoughtful, and passionate. A hint of a morbid, pessimistic streak. She often takes the moral high ground and engages in serious conversation. A natural leader with a strong sense of justice. Thoughtful.
#13 – Midfield
Stoner. Sarcastic and wise-cracking. Keeps her emotions close to the chest and uses humor to deflect. She’s not as assertive as #7 but can hold her own. Observant and clever. Harder to ruffle than most of the others.
#14 – Midfield
Outgoing, but insecure. She looks up to #7 a lot, and is a bit of a sidekick.. She speaks without a filter and sometimes says inappropriate things. She’s opinionated and confident, though not always aware of others’ feelings around her.
#25 – Captain / Center Midfield
The team captain. Organized, responsible, and authoritative. Tries to keep the team focused and on task, though she can be rigid. She means well and is respected, though she sometimes feels disconnected from the group socially. Her dad was their last coach. Has an underlying sense of trying to live up to his expectations. Strong soccer player.
#46 – Bench / the New Girl
The mysterious new team member. Homeschooled and well-traveled, she’s a bit of an outsider and doesn’t always understand social cues. She is awkward and different, without the same social preconceptions as the others. She does want to fit in. Turns out to be a great soccer player. She becomes an unexpected catalyst for change within the group.
Soccer Mom
The mother of one of the girls on the team. She appears in one scene, at the end of the play. But she also delivers a raw and emotional monologue that deals with grief and loss. Her point in the story is critical for the overall arc of the show and will require a very strong actor. This actor will be called to minimal rehearsals in February, and early March.
Please note that The Heights Players is a non-profit theater and this is a non-equity production. All cast and crew volunteer their time and talent. The Heights Players is a membership organization, there is no pay or stipend for any role or position. There is a $20 membership fee, if cast.
