Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," the literary classic celebrated every year during the holiday season, has been translated to the stage in numerous adaptations. Yet, the story of one man's incredible journey on the eve of Christmas still remains, haunting many playhouses again this year.
In New York City, the tenth and final staging of A Christmas Carol will play at the Theater at Madison Square Garden through Dec. 27. The musical version, created and directed by the late Mike Ockrent (Crazy For You) features songs by composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast) and lyricist Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime). Susan Stroman (The Producers) oversees and choreographs the production starring Jim Dale (Barnum).
Actor Bill Raymond (Wonder of the World) opens the Hartford Stage production of A Christmas Carol - A Ghost Story of Christmas through Dec. 27 in Connecticut. Artistic director Michael Wilson (Enchanted April) adapted and directed the work.
Providence, Rhode Island's Trinity Repertory Company is presenting Stacy Keach ("Mike Hammer") as Scrooge in artistic director Oskar Eustis and Amanda Dehnert's adaptation at Boston's Cutler Majestic Theatre at Emerson College until Dec. 27. The company will also present Adrian Hall and Richard Cumming's adaptation at its Providence home, through Dec. 27 as well.
Such beloved characters as Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit, Jacob Marley, the Fezziwigs and all three Ghosts of Christmas will also fill several other major regional theatres. The theatres (and final performance dates) include Minneapolis' Guthrie Theatre (through Dec. 28), Chicago's Goodman Theatre (Dec. 27), Washington D.C.'s Ford's Theatre (Dec. 31), Wisconsin's Milwaukee Repertory Theater (Dec. 28), Kentucky's Actors Theatre of Louisville (Dec. 28), Costa Mesa's South Coast Repertory (Dec. 27), Houston's Alley Theatre (Dec. 28), Seattle's ACT Theatre (Dec. 27), Denver Center Theatre Company (Dec. 28), Atlanta's Alliance Theatre Company (Dec. 28), San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre (Dec. 26), Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park (Dec. 30) and San Diego Repertory (Dec. 28).
