If/Then has music by Kitt, with book and lyrics by Yorkey. The writers earned the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for penning Next to Normal. They were Tony-nominated for Best Original Score for If/Then.
The musical is currently on a national tour that reunites several members from the original Broadway cast including Idina Menzel, LaChanze, Anthony Rapp and James Snyder.
It is expected that licensing for the contemporary, pop-driven musical will be available in fall 2016.
"When I heard the premise of If/Then, I was genuinely excited, as the concept of exploring 'what might have been' is one that has fascinated me since childhood," Drew Cohen, President of MTI Worldwide said in a statement. "Books and films have tackled the idea of choice, chance and parallel realities, but not through the enormous challenge of musical theatre. If/Then beautifully shows how we choose our lives and how our lives choose us."
If/Then arrived on Broadway March 5, 2014, and officially opened March 30. It concluded its run March 22, 2015, after 29 previews and 401 performances. Next to Normal and Rent director Michael Greif helmed the original production. Orchestrations for the musical are by Michael Starobin.
Here's how it's billed: "If/Then is the story of newly divorced Elizabeth, a woman rebuilding her life in New York City who discovers a world of infinite possibilities. The musical follows Elizabeth’s two possible journeys as 'Liz' and 'Beth' – with each seeking to fulfill diverging personal and professional aspirations."
"Art is literally imitating life for me," Menzel said when she first began the If/Then journey.
