The first trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of The Seagull teases a blend of classic and contemporary aesthetics—a choice seen previously from Tony-winning director Michael Mayer in such works as Broadway’s Spring Awakening and the Metropolitan Opera’s Vegas-set Rigoletto and Karam in his 2016 adaptation of The Cherry Orchard.
Check out the first look below. The film will be released by Sony Pictures Classics May 11.
Tony-winning The Humans playwright Stephen Karam penned the screenplay for the film, which appears to offer a modern adaptation of Chekhov’s 1896 play. Oscar nominees Annette Bening and Saoirse Ronan star as the fading artist Arkadina and aspiring actor Nina, respectively. Joining them are Tony nominees Elisabeth Moss and Mare Winningham as Masha and Polina, Tony winner Brian Dennehy as Sorin, and Corey Stoll as Trigorin.
The film also features costumes by Tony winner Ann Roth, whose work can be seen on Broadway this spring in Carousel, Three Tall Women, and The Iceman Cometh.
