Video Watch Rita Moreno Talk About Being the First Latina to Win an Oscar

The PEGOT winner will appear in the NBC special Inspiring America: The 2022 Inspiration List.

TODAY released a sneak peek of Rita Moreno's interview with host Hoda Kotb about making history as the first Latina to win an Oscar for portraying Anita in the 1961 movie adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents' West Side Story.

Moreno reflected on her community's response to her big win. She recalled people yelling "she did it!" out their windows. "As a friend of mine said, what they were really saying was 'we did it, we did it.'"

The full interview will air May 7 in the NBC News special Inspiring America: The 2022 Inspiration List. It will stream the following day and be featured in the May 9 podcast episode of Making Space with Hoda Kotb.

The special will be co-hosted by Kotb, Lester Holt, and Savannah Guthrie. Additional guests include Nathan Chen, Erin Jackson, Mikaela Shiffrin, Katharine Hayhoe, Christy Turlington Burns, and Gwynne Shotwel.
