Tony Awards Video: 'There's a Place for Us as Female Creators.' Shaina Taub on Her Tony Win for Suffs

This is Taub's first Tony win, and she's up for Best Score too.

Keep marching! Shaina Taub has received her first Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for Suffs, the suffragist movement musical she penned and stars in. Taub is also up for Best Score at the 2024 awards. Watch the multi-hyphenate react to her win in the video above, in an interview with Playbill's Jeffrey Vizcaíno.

"There's a place for us as female creators, especially as composers, and you don't have to pick a lane," Taub says. "Early in my career, I was like, 'Okay I'm acting, okay I'm composing, maybe I need to pick a box, [I'm] trying to do too much, people are going to think I'm jack of all trades master of none,' whatever. But I saw so many male creatives, wonderful male creatives, never question the fact that they were multi-hyphenate. So I think when I finally started to embrace that I was a multi-hyphenate, as a feature, not a bug, I finally started making my best work and getting the best opportunities that I'd had. Because I was standing, and owning that. If you love more than one discipline, you don't have to pick."

Suffs was nominated for six awards, including Best Musical, Featured Actress in a Musical (for Nikki M. James), Direction of a Musical (for Leigh Silverman), and Costume Design of a Musical (for Paul Tazewell).
