The musical, which premiered on Broadway in 1966, features a book by Joe Masteroff (from John Van Druten's play I Am a Camera and stories by Christopher Isherwood) and a score with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. Set in Weimar-era Germany, the story follows an American writer living in Berlin during the rise of Adolph Hitler. The classic score introduced such songs as "Willkommen," "Don't Tell Mama," and the title number.
