Performance Space 122 has announced that Vallejo Gantner has decided to step down as artistic director. He will remain with the Off-Off-Broadway theatrical landmark presenting organization until a new director is found, with a search now underway.

The announcement comes ahead of PS 122’s return to its newly-renovated, permanent space in the East Village. Gantner has been at the helm of the institution since 2005.

“I feel strongly that a new leader should be in place as PS122 returns to the East Village,” said Gantner in a press statement. “I’ve served PS 122 for over 11 years, and I’m immensely proud of what the staff and artists I’ve been privileged to work with have achieved. I have total faith in their ability to continue to realize ambitious dreams. However, I think cultural organizations, particularly those in the business of new work and ideas, must embrace change in order to remain vital. We artistic directors can often hang around a bit too long.”

Gantner will continue to curate programming until the end of 2017.

PS 122 was founded in 1979 in New York's decommissioned Public School 122 building, and provided an artistic platform for performance artists including Eric Bogosian, Karen Finley, John Leguizamo and many others.
