Tony winner Thomas Kail will make his feature film directorial debut with the live-action remake of Disney's 2016 animated musical Moana, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The remake was recently announced by the animated film's star Dwayne Johnson at Disney's annual shareholder meeting. Johnson will return to his role as the demigod Maui, and will produce with his company Seven Bucks Productions.

Kail is, of course, a long-time collaborator with the musical's songwriter, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who was Oscar nominated for the film's song "How Far I'll Go." Miranda co-wrote the score alongside Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina.

Inspired by Polynesian mythologies, the story centers on Moana, a fearless teenaged girl who sets sail to find a mythological island to save her people from annihilation amid an ecological crisis. Along the way, she meets up with almighty demigod Maui, who helps her save her family.

Kail's previous screen directing credits include the miniseries Fosse/Verdon, the televised musical Grease: Live, and the film capture of Hamilton, which can be streamed on Disney+. He is a Tony winner for his direction of Hamilton, and is currently represented on Broadway with the revival of Sweeney Todd (director, producer).
