Film & TV News Tony Winner Alan Cumming on Why He Jumped at His New TV Series Instinct Get a look at the antics Cumming gets into on set.

Tony winner Alan Cumming (Cabaret) stopped by The Today Show to talk about his latest television series Instinct.

Every the busy creator—running his Club Cumming on New York City’s Lower East Side, filming movies and Dr. Who, writing children’s books—Cumming revealed why he wanted to star in Instinct:“Two major reasons,” he says in the video above. “One, the character is so multi-faceted. He was a spy, he was a child musical prodigy. Now he’s a lecturer. But also he's gay and it's the first ever network drama on American television to have a gay character in the lead. Isn’t that nuts? And also the gayness of him is like the fifth most interesting thing about him.

“On television a lot in America, if you have a gay character, it’s like 'gay gay gay'; it’s all about that. So it’s actually refreshing that he's in this nice marriage and they’ve got a nice relationship and I think that’s a big breakthrough that people don’t just focus on his sexuality.”

But Cumming also likes to be sure his set is a happy place, as shown in a video clip from filming. “We have a speaker on the dolly,” he says. “Sometimes we're doing a scene where I'm tackling a serial killer or something and then we cut and I'm like [dancing].”

Instinct premieres March 18 at 8PM ET on CBS.
