Tony nominee Mary Bridget Davies stars in a concert reading of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own October 1 at 7 PM at Joe's Pub.

For the first time, the estate of Virginia Woolf has given permission to producers Armand & Paiva (Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812) and Bev Ragovoy (Come From Away) to reimagine the text as a play infused with original blues and rock music. Davies was previously Tony-nominated for her portrayal of Janis Joplin, a notable figurehead for the feminist movement that followed Woolf's description of freed womanhood.

A Room of One's Own is considered one of the most influential feminist texts of the early 20th century, combining fictional prose and exploratory essays to examine the plight of women penned in by a patriarchal society. Woolf's "Judith Shakespeare," in particular, became a foundational cultural reference, inspiring compositions, literary movements, and numerous writing retreats. In 2011, playwright Patricia Lamkin was inspired to write a play, Balancing The Moon, after immersing herself in Woolf's text. While it is based on the ideas of A Room of One's Own, the piece contains none of Woolf's own words.

Kirsten Z. Cairns directs the concert reading. The music team includes TJ Armand, Mark Berman, and Alex Prezzano.
