Produced by Stacey Mindich, the Broadway transfer of the hit Off-Broadway musical will officially open at the Belasco Theatre December 4. Previews begin November 14.
Pitch Perfect's Ben Platt, who led the world and New York premieres of the musical, will once again star as Evan Hansen, a performance for which he recently earned a 2016 Obie Award, plus nominations from the Drama League Awards and the Outer Critics Circle Awards. Platt will be joined by his Second Stage co-stars Laura Dreyfuss, Rachel Bay Jones, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Mike Faist, Will Roland and Kristolyn Lloyd. Emmy Award winner Michael Park, who originated the role of Larry Murphy at Arena Stage in Washington D.C., returns for the Broadway production. Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting.
The transfer had been expected since the production at Second Stage Theatre was announced. The Off-Broadway premiere opened May 1 following previews that began March 26 and quickly sold out its entire limited run, which ended May 29.
The original musical features a score by the Tony and Emmy-nominated songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dogfight, A Christmas Story), a book by Steven Levenson (Masters of Sex), choreography by Danny Mefford (Fun Home) and direction by three-time Tony nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal, If/Then).
Sparked by a real-life death at Pasek's high school more than a decade ago, Dear Evan Hansen follows one student's struggle for identity amidst the ensuing chaos. The production had its world premiere in summer 2015 at Arena Stage in Washington, DC.
Dear Evan Hansen received two 2016 Obie Awards, for Musical Theatre presented to Levenson, Pasek & Paul, and for Performance presented to Platt. The show also won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical and the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Musical.
The show will transfer with its creative team intact: scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Emily Rebholz, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, sound design by Nevin Steinberg and projection design by Peter Nigrini. The musical director is Ben Cohn, and the music supervisor is Alex Lacamoire. Danny Mefford is the choreographer.
