Summer is for outdoors and vacations. But if you do happen to find yourself with a couple of free hours on the sofa, we have some suggestions for streaming. Tune into Amazon Prime for a dark new comedy, Disney+ for a Broadway sing-along, and PBS for a patriotic holiday concert.
Take a look below at our July 2023 streaming recommendations and some of the Broadway stars who will be making small-screen appearances this month.
Amazon Prime Video
Justina Machado (In the Heights) returns to upper Manhattan in the Sweeney Todd-inspired series The Horror of Dolores Roach. Originally written by Aaron Mark as the one-woman play Empanada Loca, the story follows a woman who returns to her gentrified neighborhood in Washington Heights after 16 years in prison. She meets up with an old friend and opens a massage parlor in the basement of his empanada shop...oh, we see where this going. The series also stars Alejandro Hernandez, Kita Updike, and K. Todd Freeman. Stream it July 7.
Disney+
We've been singing along with Hamilton for years now, but the streamer just made it a little easier to catch some of those whip-quick lyrics in "Guns and Ships." The filmed version of the Lin-Manuel Miranda Tony- and Pulitzer-winning musical has been streaming on Disney+ for three years, but on June 30 the streamer added the Hamilton: Sing-Along version with lyric captions. Just in time for Independence Day celebrations!
Netflix
Ellie Kemper, who just made her Broadway debut last month with a one-week guest stint in Peter Pan Goes Wrong, leads the new Netflix original rom-com Happiness for Beginners. Kemper plays a divorcee who enrolls in a backcountry survival course hiking the Appalachian Trail. Based on Katherine Center’s novel of the same name, the film also stars actor and country musician Luke Grimes as a fellow hiker (and potential new love interest?). Keep your eyes peeled for Gus Birney (The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window) and Tony winner Blythe Danner, too. Stream it July 27.

Don't miss the annual Independence Day celebration A Capitol Fourth from PBS. Song and dance man Alfonso Ribeiro hosts the televised concert from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Backed by the National Symphony Orchestra, the evening will feature the talents of Tina Tony winner Adrienne Warren, who will pay tribute to the late Tina Turner; the Broadway company of A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical, featuring Will Swenson and Robyn Hurder; opera star Renée Fleming; Ruthie Ann Miles; and many more. Following the July 4 broadcast on PBS, the concert will stream on PBS.org.
