The Chicago premiere of Pulitzer winner James Ijames' The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington ends its run at Steppenwolf Theatre Company's Downstairs Theatre October 9. The production, which began September 1, launches the Chicago theatre's 47th season.
Cindy Gold stars as Martha Washington, joined by Sydney Charles as Priscilla, Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Davy, Nikki Crawford as Ann Dandridge, Victor Musoni as William, and Donovan Session as Sucky Boy, with ensemble member Celeste M. Cooper as Doll.
Whitney White directs the play, which follows the recently widowed “Mother of America,” who lies alone in her Mount Vernon bed, ravaged by illness and attended to by the very same enslaved people who will be free the moment she dies.
The creative team includes scenic designer Clint Ramos, costume designer Izumi Inaba, lighting designer Amith Chandrashaker, company voice and text coach Gigi Buffington, casting director JC Clementz, production stage manager Christine D. Freeburg, and assistant stage manager Kathleen Barrett.
