Atlantic Theater Company celebrates the official opening of Lauren Yee's play The Great Leap June 4 in the company's Stage 2. The New York premiere, which began performances May 23, stars Tony winner and Emmy Award nominee BD Wong (Mr. Robot, Law & Order: SVU, M. Butterfly).

Obie-winning Is God Is director Taibi Magar directs a cast that also includes Ali Ahn (The Path, The Heidi Chronicles), Ned Eisenberg (Six Degrees of Separation), and Tony Aidan Vo (NoNo Boy).

Inspired by events from her father’s life and (short-lived) basketball career, Yee's The Great Leap weaves a tale of history and personal identity. Set in San Francisco in 1989, the play follows Manford Lum, a basketball player who talks his way onto a college team just before they travel to Beijing for a “friendship” game. When they arrive, China is in the throes of the post-Cultural Revolution era, and Manford must juggle international politics and his own personal history.

The Off-Broadway production has been extended through June 24.

Yee’s previous works include In A Word, a finalist for the ATCA/Steinberg Award; The Hatmaker’s Wife, which was an Outer Critics Circle nominee for the John Gassner Award for best play by a new American playwright; and King Of The Yees, which premiered last season at The Goodman Theatre. She is the recipient of the 2017 Kesselring Prize for Playwriting from the National Arts Club.

The Great Leap at Atlantic Theater Company features scenic design by Takeshi Kata, costume design by Tilly Grimes, lighting design by Eric Southern, sound and original compositions by Broken Chord, projection design by David Bengali, movement direction by Jesse Perez, and casting by Caparelliotis Casting: David Caparelliotis, CSA; Lauren Port, CSA; and Joseph Gery.
