BBC Video will release "The Dame Edna Experience: The Complete Series One" June 8. The first of three upcoming DVD sets from the British television series features six shows that Dame Edna has dubbed "monologues interrupted by total strangers." The first disc will include four programs, including interviews with Sean Connery, Cliff Richard, Mary Whitehouse, Joan Rivers, Jeffrey Archer, Demis Roussos, Jane Seymour, Larry Hagman, Arthur Marshall, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Germaine Greer and Nana Mouskouri. The second disc boasts chats with Charlton Heston, Patrick Lichfield, Jerry Hall, Rudolph Nureyev, Sir John Mills and Cynthia Payne. A host of bonus features will also be found on the upcoming release: Dame Edna looks back on "The Dame Edna Experience" in a newly recorded feature; Dame Edna fields questions from a celebrity audience in "An Audience with Dame Edna"; the Dame performs "Niceness" in the 1976 BBC special "The Barry Humphries Show"; and Barry Humphries is the subject of two interviews, including one hosted by Dame Edna herself.
Dubbed Australia's First Lady, Dame Edna is the invention of Humphries, a successful character actor in Europe and Australia as well as an esteemed landscape painter. Some of Humphries' theatrical credits include roles in Waiting for Godot, Oliver! and Maggie May, but his most successful outings have been as Dame Edna, a character he created in 1956. Humphries was given the Order of Australia in 1982 and was endowed with an Honorary Doctorate of Griffith University in Australia in 1994.
