The New Group has revealed the lineup for their first season in their new home at The Theater at St. Clements. After decades of being itinerant, the Tony-winning company is putting down roots at the venue, which has hosted theatre performances in tandem with church service since its opening in 1962. Now that legacy continues with The New Group, who has signed a 30-year lease with the church.
The upcoming year will bring three works to the venue, with Elmer L. Rice's The Adding Machine in winter 2026, Preston Crowder's Bocking in summer 2026, and Adam Rapp's Jackals in fall 2026. Specific dates and casting and full creative team information will be announced at a later date.
The Adding Machine follows Mr. Zero, another cog in the machine who can't fulfill his own needs, much less his wife's. But when his boss replaces him with a machine, he lashes out violently. The play was penned over a century ago, but clearly resonates today.
Directed by Stevie Walker-Webb, Bocking examines two parents sent to the principal's office after their children overhear what they were up to in their bedroom. A preacher, a gay exorcism, and a chicken collide in this sex farce.
Carolyn Cantor will direct Jackals. Set in a pandemic-blighted Middle American city in the not-so-distant future, single mother Orla must choose between a better life for herself or her 14 year old, whose ticket out may be the only commodity left: his immune system.
