Tarell Alvin McCraney's Tony-nominated Choir Boy is coming to Stratford East, and a complete company has been assembled.

The production is a reprisal of Nancy Medina’s 2023 staging from the Bristol Old Vic, which won three Black British Theatre Awards (BBTA), including Best Production and Best Director. The Stratford East production will run March 26–April 25.

Terique Jarrett (Juniper Blood) will reprise his role as Pharus, having won the BBTA for Best Male Lead Actor in a Play for his performance at Bristol Old Vic. Michael Ahomka-Lindsay (Reverberation) will also return as David, with Daon Broni (Girl on An Altar) as Headmaster Marrow, Khalid Daley (The Big Life) as JR, and Martin Turner (Silence) as Mr. Pendleton. Rabi Kondé (Clueless) joins the cast as Bobby, with Freddie MacBruce (The Little Foxes) as AJ.

From the Oscar-winning writer of Moonlight comes this drama about Pharus, a young, gay student leading the gospel choir at his elite, all-boys prep school. Can a rigid institution that prides itself on producing “strong, ethical black men” contain Pharus, who is a quiet rebel at his core? Or can Pharus inspire the very nature of the school to shift forever?

The creative team includes co-director Tatenda Shamiso, set and costume designer Max Johns, music director and arranger Femi Temowo, composer and sound designer Donato Wharton, lighting designer Nao Nagai, movement director and intimacy coordinator Ingrid MacKinnon, casting director Julia Horan, voice and dialect coach Aundrea Fudge, associate movement director Ewa Emini, production manager Gemma Brooks, company stage manager Vanessa Sutherland, deputy stage manager Theodore Hung, and assistant stage manager Emily Mei-Ling Pearce.

Choir Boy is presented by Stratford East and originally produced by Bristol Old Vic.
