Manhattan's 45th street between 8th avenue and Broadway, was blocked off from the public on the afternoon of March 28. The Imperial Theatre, Jacobs Theatre, Booth Theatre, Minskoff Theatre and Music Box theatre are all located on that block.
“They found a suspicious package outside the Marriott,“ one NYPD officer told Playbill.com. Another officer said the area, which was swarmed with police vehicles and fire engines, was completely safe and should be accessible again by 5 PM.
Employees of the Marriott were told to wait nearby, as nobody was being granted access until the matter had been fully investigated. Hotel guests expecting to check-in were turned away, while guests inside the hotel were instructed to stay indoors.
While many Broadway theatres are dark Monday evenings, nearby shows like Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on 46th street and Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theatre on 44th street, have performances scheduled March 28.
The Times Square Alliance and the Marriott have confirmed that the area is now safe and completely accessible to the public. The suspicious package was cleared; no further information was provided.
