Here, via email, we hear from singing actress Patti Murin, who has been seen on Broadway in Lysistrata Jones and Xanadu and will play 54 Below later this month.
What show recently impressed you?
Obviously, Violet is an easy answer, but not just because my boyfriend is in it! I think it's perfect proof that musicals can be simple and scaled down, yet still retain their beauty and power. I was taught all through college that the best shows are the ones that can be performed without costumes, sets and lighting and still affect an audience, and to me, the company and creative team have achieved that with this show. And, somehow, it seems effortless! And, also, Colin Donnell in uniform. I mean, come on.
What production are you most excited to see?
I am literally counting down the days until I can see Andrew Rannells take over the Belasco in Hedwig! I've never seen the show, am about as unfamiliar with the show as one can possibly be, and I can't wait to see what surprises he has in store for everyone. He's a brilliant actor, and this will further prove that he can do anything and make people believe it.
What play/musical would you most like to revive on Broadway, and which role would you want to play?
I have two answers for this! One is Crazy for You. This was the first show I did out of college, and I fell in love with that show and the choreography and the character of Polly. A feisty, tap-dancing, belting ingenue? Even though I've done mostly contemporary musicals, that is what I was really trained to do. And, I'm also dying to play Ellen in Miss Saigon. Beautiful show, beautiful music, beautiful role.
What are your current/upcoming projects?
I'm gearing up to make my 54 Below debut on August 11th with a solo show that I have entitled Literally Patti Murin. Because it's literally going to be me, singing a bunch of songs from new musicals that I have originated roles in, such as Xanadu and Lysistrata Jones. With some popular tunes thrown in just for fun. And then something else that I'm incredibly excited for, but not allowed to talk about yet. Stay tuned!
