The festival will open Feb. 3, 2015, with excerpts from Three Vernacular Songs by Gabriel Kahane, as well as selections from musicals in progress by George Steel and Tony Award-winning Light in the Piazza composer-lyricist Adam Guettel. New pieces by Jonathan Dove and Juantio Becenti will also be offered. On Feb. 10, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec will host an evening that will include selections from his new opera The Shining, based on the Stephen King horror novel. The opera, which features a libretto by Mark Campbell, will premiere at Minnesota Opera in 2016. The evening will also include a tribute to the late Stephen Paulus and selections by colleagues James Primosch, Christopher Theofanidis and Paola Prestini.
The final concert in the series, to be presented Feb. 17, will showcase the opening to the new opera Dream of the Red Chamber, written by composer Bright Sheng and co-librettist David Henry Hwang. The opera will premiere at the San Francisco Opera in fall 2016.
