Farewell to Shakespearean scholar Toby Lelyveld, who died Nov. 30. According to the New York Times obituary, Lelyveld, 85, specialized in the stage history of William Shakespeare's plays, notably The Merchant Of Venice. Her book, Shylock On Stage (1960), traced the way the controversial role had been played up to that time. Lelyveld taught at The Juilliard School, Columbia University and Western Reserve University. She also edited the program notes for Theatre Recording Society, Caedmon Records and Spoken Arts Records during the 1960s and 70s. Her son, Joseph Lelyveld, is the executive editor of the New York Times.
