Regional News See Who's Starring in Joan Rivers Bioplay at Cape Playhouse

Joan is written by Daniel Goldstein, and the late comedian's daughter Melissa Rivers is executive producing.

Massachusetts' Cape Playhouse has found casting for its upcoming Joan Rivers bioplay Joan, written by Daniel Goldstein and set to run September 3-20. Opening night will be September 4.

Starring will be Alex Finke as Melissa Rivers and Young Joan, opposite Nicole Parker as Joan Rivers. The cast will also feature Rich Topol and Garrett Poladian. Casting is by Stephanie Klapper.

Tye Blue is directing the work, which counts the real Melissa Rivers as executive producer and Larry Amoros, Rivers' longtime writing collaborator, as script supervisor. The play made a world premiere at South Coast Repertory in 2024, and is currently playing Massachusetts' Barrington Stage (in a separate staging).

“At my core, I’m a producer and a storyteller, and Joan started as this wild, experiential idea pre-COVID, before the world shut down,” says Rivers in a statement. “As we dug in, it became clear there had to be a storytelling element, and the more we built it out, the more it naturally took shape as a full-fledged play. Daniel Goldstein wrote an incredible script that captures my mother’s essence—her grit, her brilliance, and her ability to say what no one else would. The result is something that not only honors her legacy, but gives audiences permission to laugh out loud at the things we’re not ‘supposed’ to say anymore. She was honestly one of the rare comedians who could pull that off, and obviously, still is.”

The production will feature sets by Anton Volovsek, costumes by Gail Baldoni and Alejo Vietti, lighting by Paige Seber, sound design by Germán Martínez, and wig design by Bobbie Zlotnik. Mary Kate Baughman will be stage manager with Allison Vogelmeier as assistant stage manager.

Tickets are at CapePlayhouse.com.
