Breaking the Binary Theatre will present Cecilia Gentili’s Red Ink Off-Broadway later this summer.

Supported by Tony winner Sara Ramírez, Ianne Fields Stewart, Rattlestick Theater, and Killer Films, the piece will feature three different individuals performing in tribute to Gentili, directed by Nic Cory (Buyer & Cellar). Beginning performances July 30, the production will run through August 18 at Rattlestick Theater. 100% of the profits made will be donated to causes close to Gentili’s heart.

Performing the solo show in rotation, Red Ink will be led by Jes Tom (Life & Beth) from July 30 through August 4, Angelica Ross (Pose, Chicago) from August 6 through August 11, and Peppermint (Head Over Heels, RuPaul’s Drag Race) from August 13 through August 18. All three actors will perform with a script in hand.

The all-trans and queer creative team for Red Ink will include music by two-time Grammy winner Andrew Yee (Carmen), lighting design by Adam Honoré (I Can Get It For You Wholesale), projection design by Sasha Velour (RuPaul’s Drag Race), and costume design by Gogo Graham. Flower Rios will serve as the Associate Producer and Joseph Frederick Allen will serve as the Associate Director/Producer. Oscar Diaz is the piece’s Original Creative Director.

Ms. Gentili, who passed away this past February, was a trans icon, artist, and activist whose solo shows encouraged fierce honesty in the face of bigoted pressure to stay silent. At the time of her passing, Mr. Gentili was scheduled to perform her own engagement of Red Ink, which explores her search for faith as a trans woman.

“Cecilia was a generous, hilarious and singular talent who brought joy to everyone she met,” shares Cory. “Developing Red Ink with her was the most fulfilling and happiest artistic experience I’ve ever had. I am thrilled to be partnering with George, Sara, Ianne, Rattlestick and Killer Films—along with a truly exceptional cast—to make sure her unforgettable stories live on.”

“Cecilia Gentili’s Red Ink marks Breaking the Binary Theatre’s Off-Broadway producorial debut,” Strus added. “Since her passing on February 6, Cecilia has continued to watch over many of us in spirit, and it is a great gift and honor to keep this work alive in tribute to her.”

Following every performance on Wednesday and Friday, there will be a facilitated conversation with community partners. ASL interpretation will be provided at every Thursday performance. Every Saturday, audiences are encouraged to stay after the show for a post-show performance led by a trans artist.
