Whose Line Is It Anyway performer Colin Mochrie and master hypnotist Asad Mecci's HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis opened at Off-Broadway's Daryl Roth Theatre August 22, following previews August 12. The 12-week limited engagement will play through October 30.
Directed by Stan Zimmerman (Gilmore Girls), the 100-minute interactive show combines hypnosis and improv. The experience begins with Mecci inviting 20 volunteers on stage to be hypnotized, and those most receptive will improvise the show with Mochrie.
The show was co-created by Mochrie and Mecci, along with Mochrie’s manager, Jeff Andrews, in 2016 at Toronto's Second City. The work went on to run at Just for Laughs Montreal and the Edinburgh Fringe before setting out on a 50-city tour.
The production includes an original score by Rufus Wainwright, creative consulting by Tony winner Bob Martin (The Prom), scenic design by Jo Winiarski, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, and music direction by John Hilsen. The work is executive produced by Cody Lassen and produced by Sarah Power, Chaz Naor, Oui BeLeaf (NHR), Jörn Weisbrodt, Joan Tosoni, M.J. Power International Inc, Salah Bachir, Brad Blume, Matteo Golini, Esther Kim, Lorena Zvi Shiff, Marc Stern Family, Toufik Sarwa, The Descourouez Group, MKFD; in association with Bilo Investments LLC, Nancy Donohue, Kors Le Pere Theatricals, David Lipowicz, The Mecci Family, Zorbas Whittle Inc.

Going from Cole Escola to Betty Gilpin to Tituss Burgess in Broadway's Oh, Mary! isn’t the first time a show has thrown gender norms to the wind with replacement casting.
A portion of the proceeds from the concert will benefit the Entertainment Community Fund's Women's Health Initiative, founded by the late Phyllis Newman.
