Laura Bell Bundy, Kara Lindsay, and the rest of the cast met the press to preview the screen-to-stage musical coming to Stage 42 next month.

The cast and creators of Off-Broadway's upcoming Romy & Michele: The Musical met the press September 29 to give a sneak peek of the screen-to-stage musical, and Playbill's cameras were there! See the company—led by stars Laura Bell Bundy and Kara Lindsay as Romy White and Michele Weinberger, respectively—perform two numbers from the show above.

The musical is set to begin at Stage 42 beginning October 14 ahead of an October 28 opening night. Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages) is directing and Karla Puno Garcia is choreographing. In development for more than a decade and adapted from the cult classic 1997 film Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, the project features a book by the film's screenwriter, Robin Schiff, and music and lyrics by Gwendolyn Sanford and Brandon Jay. Orchestrations, music supervision, and arrangements are by Keith Harrison Dworkin.

The cast also includes Jordan Kai Burnett as Heather Mooney, Erica Dorfler as Kelly Possenger, Michael Thomas Grant as Sandy Frink, Je'Shaun Jackson as Toby Walters, Pascal Pastrana as Billy Christianson, and Lauren Ashley Zakrin as Christie Masters, along with DeMarius R. Copes and Ninako Donville.

The casting will give a triumphant return for Bundy to the New York musical theatre stage. The Tony nominee hasn't led a musical here since starring in Legally Blonde in 2007. She was most recently seen in the 2023 Broadway play The Cottage, and has also been on Broadway in Wicked and Hairspray. Lindsay, who created the role of Katherine in Newsies, was most recently seen on Broadway as the standby for Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress, and has also starred in Beautiful and Wicked.

The musical follows two Valley girls who, eager to impress their former classmates, return to their old stomping grounds a decade later with a lie involving (among other things) Post-Its. Mira Sorvino (currently starring on Broadway in Chicago) and Lisa Kudrow starred in the 1997 film version.

This musical premiered in 2017 at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre (also directed by Hanggi), and has since held several developmental workshops in the U.S. and U.K. Casting and further creative team members for the upcoming Off-Broadway bow are to be announced. Barry Kemp, Stephen Soucy, Peter Schneider, and Laurence Mark are producing, with Showtown Productions serving as executive producer.
