Industry readings of a new production of Cole Porter's 1930 musical The New Yorkers, last seen in New York in 2017 for City Center Encores!, will be presented April 23–24.

Directed by Tony winner John Rando, the cast will feature Scarlett Strallen as Alice Wentworth, Tam Mutu as Al Spanish, Kevin Chamberlin as Jimmy Deegan, Mylinda Hull as Mona Low, Robyn Hurder as Lola McGee, Arnie Burton as Feet McGeegan, Byron Jennings as Dr. Windham Wentworth, Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth as Gloria Wentworth, Anaïs Reno as Lady of the Evening, David Baida as Phillip Booster, Kyle Scatliffe as Capt. Hillary Trask, Matt Saldivar as Doctor/Major Domo, Clyde Alves as Monahan, and Jeffrey Schecter as Gregory with Colin Anderson, John Harmon Cooper, Christine DiGiallonardo, Katie McCreary, Timothy McDevitt, Kent Overshown, Lindsay Roberts, and Daniel Schwait.

The New Yorkers features music and lyrics by Porter, with a book by Herbert Fields, based on a story by E. Ray Goetz and Peter Arno. This adaptation is penned by Jack Viertel with musical direction and arrangements are by Rob Berman.

Inspired by cartoonist Arno’s work for The New Yorker, the musical, set in Prohibition-era New York, follows socialite Alice Wentworth as she pursues bootlegger Al Spanish from Park Avenue to prison.

The New Yorkers originally opened on Broadway in 1930, and featured such Porter standards as “Love for Sale,” “Take Me Back to Manhattan,” “Let’s Fly Away,” and “I Happen to Like New York.” The Encores! production was restored by Viertel from original material once thought lost, incorporating additional Porter songs, including “Night and Day” and “You’ve Got That Thing.”

Casting for the upcoming readings is by Telsey & Co. with general management by ShowTown Theatricals. Joe Abrams and Sally Wood are producing.

In 2019 Ghostlight Records recorded a new cast album of The New Yorkers, based on the 2017 Encores! presentation. The album, produced by Berman and Lawrence Manchester, featured the Encores! principal cast, including Mutu, Strallen, Cyrille Aimée, Alves, Todd Buonopane, Burton, Chamberlin, Hull, Hurder, Jennings, Eddie Korbich, Schecter, Tyler Lansing Weaks, and Ruth Williamson.
