From classical motets to contemporary concertos, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week:

May 25, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and pianist Kirill Kuzmin will perform how do I find you at the Kaufman Music Center. The album how do I find you, a collection of works commissioned by Cooke during the COVID-19 pandemic, was nominated for the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, and includes works by Caroline Shaw, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Gabriel Kahane, and Kamala Sankaram.

Marin Alsop joins the New York Philharmonic May 25-27 to conduct a program comprising Barber’s Symphony in One Movement, a suite from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, and the US premiere of a trombone concerto by jazz musician Chick Corea, his last completed work, written for and played by NYPhil principal trombone Joseph Alessi.

May 28, musicians from the New York Philharmonic will perform at the Kaufman Music Center as part of the New York Philharmonic Ensembles series. The concert will include works by Brahms, Britten, and Lukas Foss.

The Chamber Orchestra of New York will perform at Carnegie Hall May 26, playing a program of Barber, Britten, Elgar, and Rodrigo. Flautist Ginevra Petrucci joins the orchestra for Rodrigo’s Fantasia para un gentilhombre.

The New England Symphonic Ensemble will present two concerts at Carnegie Hall May 26 and 27. The May 26 program will include Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Aitken’s Songs of Promise and Peace, Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony, and Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus.” The May 27 program will include Beethoven’s third symphony, and works Mozart, Vivaldi, Vaughan Williams, and more.

May 26-29, Brooklyn Academy of Music will present DanceAfrica, a celebration of Ghanaian dance, featuring performances by the National Theater of Ghana's National Dance Company, the DanceAfrica Spirit Walkers, and Arkestra Africa.

May 23-28, choreographer Dada Masilo presents The Sacrifice at the Joyce Theater in Chelsea. Inspired by Pina Bausch’s The Rite of Spring, The Sacrifice combines ballet with modern and traditional Botswanan dance.

At the Metropolitan Opera, performances continue of Franco Zeffirelli’s production of La Bohème, Ivo van Hove’s production of Don Giovanni, and Simon McBuney’s production of Die Zauberflöte, which opened last week.

At the New York City Ballet, performances continue of three programs including works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Alexei Ratmansky, and Justin Peck.
