The Public Theater kicks off its 2024-2025 season with the North American premiere of S. Shakthidharan and Eamon Flack's Counting and Cracking, a co-production with NYU Skirball officially opening September 12. Performances began September 6 and will continue through September 22. Flack is directing.
The production comes to NY via Australia's Belvoir St Theatre and Kurinji, who are co-producing with The Public. The show tracks a Sri-Lankan Australian family over multiple generations, from 1956 to 2004.
The cast includes Rodney Afif, Prakash Belawadi, Senuri Chandrani, Antonythasan Jesuthasan, Nadie Kammallaweera, Ahilan Karunaharan, Abbie-Lee Lewis, Gandhi MacIntyre, Radhika Mudaliyar, Shiv Palekar, Dushan Philips, Sukhbir Singh Walia (Sunny), Nipuni Sharada, Kaivalya Suvarna, Raj Velu, and Sukania Venugopal. They're joined by musicians Kranthi Kiran Mudigonda, Janakan Suthanthiraraj, and Venkhatesh Sritharan.
The production features choreography by Anandavalli, set and costume design by Dale Ferguson, lighting design by Damien Cooper, and sound design and music by Stefan Gregory. Anandavalli is also serving as costume and cultural advisor.
