The upcoming movie musical of Mean Girls has revealed some casting, with Broadway names set to bring the musical to the screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Renée Rapp, who starred as Regina George during the musical's Broadway run, will reprise her performance on screen, alongside A Strange Loop Tony nominee Jaquel Spivey as Damien. It's not yet clear when the film is expected to hit movie theatres.
Also in the cast are Moana and Little Mermaid Live star Auli'i Cravalho as Janis and Spider-Man film star Angourie Rice as Cady.
As previously announced, Tina Fey is penning the new film's screenplay after writing the 2004 original and the stage musical's book. The score features music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde). New to the project are co-directors Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez, Jr.
Mean Girls follows former homeschooler Cady Heron as she moves from Africa to the Chicago suburbs. Suddenly thrust into the challenges of public high school, Cady meets the evil Plastics, North Shore High's most powerful clique. The stage production, directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, opened at Broadway's August Wilson Theatre in 2018 and closed during the pandemic shutdown. A national tour is currently on the road.
