Awards Reimagined Obie Awards Will Give Winners Cash Grants in Lieu of Awards Ceremony

Winners will receive grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to support further growth.

The Obie Awards are pivoting away from an annual awards ceremony. The American Theatre Wing revealed today that beginning with this year's awards, winners will be announced to press without a ceremony, but will also newly include grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to support the further growth of the artists.

Select winners will be announced on Spectrum New NY1's On Stage January 27 at 7:30 PM. A full list of winners plus recorded acceptance speeches will be available on ObieAwards.com directly following the NY1 broadcast.

The 67th Annual Obie Awards will recognize the best of the 2022-2023 Off- and Off-Off-Broadway season, as judged by a committee comprising Dede Ayite, Wilson Chin, Ty Defoe, Ann C. James, Haruna Lee, Florencia Lozano, Carmelita Tropicana, David Mendizábal, and Melissa Rose Bernardo. Mendizábal and Bernardo are the committee's co-chairs. The eligibility window for this year's honors includes productions that opened between September 1, 2022, through August 31, 2023.

“We are truly excited about this next iteration of The Obies because it genuinely reflects the ethos of the Awards as well as the Off- and Off-Off-Broadway movements—which is to continuously evolve and meet the moment,” says American Theatre Wing President and CEO Heather Hitchens in a statement. “The grants and our relationship with Spectrum News NY1 will provide meaningful support, and more effective, nationwide promotion for these incredible artists, innovators, and theatre companies.”
