Like its titular character, Rebecca the musical refuses to be forgotten. Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay's Rebecca musical will make its long-awaited English premiere in London in 2023. The musical, which has been an audience favorite in Germany and Japan since its premiere in 2006, was Broadway-bound in 2012 before an infamous scandal took the project down. Charing Cross Theatre will now produce Rebecca, with a run set for September 4–November 18, 2023.
Producer Ben Sprecher had been planning English-language productions of the musical as early as 2009, with Broadway favorite Sierra Boggess attached to star. Main Stem bows were announced and later cancelled twice in 2012, the latter instance following the "sudden death" of a major investor. As it turned out, that investor never actually existed, the creation of now-convicted fraudster Mark Hotton. Sprecher, who in unrelated charges was arrested in 2019 for downloading and sharing child pornography, does not appear to be involved with the forthcoming London premiere.
TIMELINE: How Rebecca The Musical Made Headlines Without Even Opening (Yet...)
Based on the 1938 novel by Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca follows the wealthy Maxim De Winter as he brings his naïve new wife home, to the dismay of housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, who is loyal to Maxim's first wife Rebecca. The musical features a book and lyrics by Kunze and music and orchestrations by Levay. The upcoming production will use the English book adaptation by Christopher Hampton (Sunset Boulevard) that Sprecher had been trying to premiere, with English lyrics co-written by Hampton and Kunze.
Director Alejandro Bonatto will lead a new creative team for the Charing Cross run, including choreographer Ron Howell and sound designer Andy Johnson. Casting, which is to be announced, is by David Grindrod. Charing Cross Managing Director Steven M. Levy is producing for Charing Cross Theatre Productions Limited.
