Film star Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Mean Girls) will make her Broadway debut in Manhattan Theatre Club's upcoming production of Amy Herzog's Mary Jane, beginning performances April 2, 2024, at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Opening night has not yet been announced.
The new play from the Pulitzer finalist follows a single mom raising a child battling a difficult illness and the community of women around her that become a makeshift family. Anne Kauffman is directing the work's Broadway premiere, with further casting and creative team to be announced.
Mary Jane premiered at Yale Repertory Theatre in 2017 with Emily Donahoe and Kathleen Chalfant starring. An Off-Broadway bow followed the same year at New York Theatre Workshop with Carrie Coon and Brenda Wehle in the cast. Kauffman will stage the Broadway bow after helming both the Yale Rep and Off-Broadway productions.
Manhattan Theatre Club's 2023-2024 season launches September 12 as Jocelyn Bioh's Jaja's African Hair Braiding begins previews on Broadway at the Friedman. Qui Nguyen's Poor Yella Rednecks will follow Off-Broadway in October, with Joshua Harmon's Prayer for the French Republic making its Broadway premiere beginning in December. John Patrick Shanley's Brooklyn Laundry will make its world premiere Off-Broadway with performances beginning in winter 2024.
