Off-Broadway's Public has added Eli Rarey and Alexander Molochnikov's Seagull: True Story to its season, with performances slated to begin in LuEsther Hall March 22 ahead of a March 30 opening night. The limited run will continue through April 26.
Created and directed by Molochnikov and written by Rarey, the semi-autobiographical piece is inspired by an experience Molochnikov had staging a production of Chekhov's The Seagull that involves, according to press notes, "comedic mayhem, artistic rebellion, and deeply personal reflection[s] on displacement, censorship, and the pursuit of creative freedom." A production of MART Foundation, the play previously bowed at NYC's La MaMa and London's Marylebone Theatre.
The production will feature an ensemble of international actors to be announced.
“Seagull: True Story is a play about empathy, betrayal, and the choices that shape our lives long after we make them," says MART Foundation Executive Producer Sofia Kapkov in a statement. "There is no better home for it than The Public Theater—a place where human truth, community, and bold voices come together on stage.”
Tickets go on sale for Public Partner and Supporter Plus-level subscribers December 3, with Supporter-level tickets going on sale December 5. Single tickets will be available beginning December 17. Visit PublicTheater.org.
