Playbill Goes Fringe Pleasance Announces 2nd Round of Edinburgh Fringe Programming

More than 130 shows have been added to the venue's roster for this August's festival.

We are officially on the verge of the Edinburgh Fringe avalanche, with Pleasance announcing an additional 134 shows for its Fringe programming.

The Pleasance Edinburgh is a theatre, bar, sport, and recreation complex situated on Pleasance Street in Old Town Edinburgh. With multiple large capacity locations at the main courtyard and at Pleasance Dome, Pleasance is the perfect home for large-scale productions, such as the perennial Fringe favorite improv musical Showstoppers! (where a talented team of performers improvise a new musical every night). Plus, it hosts many international comedy and cabaret acts.

In the theatre arena, a mixture of new musicals, historical retellings, reimagined classics, and more will be on offer. From an apocalyptic rom-com by Fringe First Winner David Finnigan, to a slippery and subversive take on a classic radio play, Pleasance is pulling out all of the dramatic stops in support of new theatrical delights.

A number of new musical comedies will be highlights of the Pleasance season, including the queer punk musical Tit Swingers, about the real-life polyamorous queer female pirates Anne Bonney and Mary Read; Kafka's Metamorphosis: The Musical! With Puppets!; and a musical exploration of The Emu War, which saw Australian ex-military men lose a war over farmland to an endless flock of avian agitation.

Politically resonant theatre weaves through much of Pleasance's programming. Performed at the U.S. Capitol Center, Sell Me: I Am From North Korea is a new solo piece inspired by the true stories of North Korea's women defectors. Also on offer will be The Shroud Maker, a black comedy which combines immersive audio and original compositions to depict life in Palestine before the invasion.

RuPaul's Drag Race UK winner Ginger Johnson will present a solo show, Ginger Johnson Blows Off!, while comedy cross dresser Kate Butch will share her jukebox musical Wuthering Shites, and award-winning Drag King Bi-Curious George will offer Queer Planet, which aims to shatter the heteronormative binaries through which we view nature.

In the comedy arena, several Fringe favorites will head back to Pleasance this year, including Nina Conti, Ahir Shah, Patti Harrison, Ania Magliano, Celya AB, and Sh!t-faced Shakespeare, plus the return of Playbill favorites Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story and Buffy Revamped.

This year's comedy program is robust, featuring 2018 Edinburgh Comedy Award winner and creator of Starstruck, Rose Matafeo, in On and On and On; Sophie Duker in her new show BUT DADDY I LOVE HER; and Ivo Graham proving he’s not just Taskmaster’s yardstick for failure with his show Grand Designs. Additionally, Paul Merton and Suki Webster, two of the U.K.’s leading improvisational comedians, will present a new show this year.

A number of new faces will also be present in the courtyard, including Charlie George, an ex-Jehovah’s Witness escape artist; agricultural icon Katie Norris; sketch show Metroland; and the stand-up debut Ted Lasso's Derek Mitchell.
