How to Broadway-size Your Next Party or Event with PLAYBILLDER
This week's Spotlight is Alma High School of Alma, Arkansas, and their dance department's production of The Secrets in the Suits. In this thrilling original story, highly-trained operatives at The Agency discover a mole in their ranks. With the safe recovery of captured comrades at stake, five spies must fight to clear their names while uncovering the perpetrator who has put them all at risk.
Director Sara Murray Sellers shared with Playbill what her students are loving most about the show and how the growth of her school's arts program has enabled them to receive state funding.
Tell us about yourself. How many years have you been teaching?
Sara Murray Sellers: This is my 11th year at Alma High School! I am the Director of the Dance Department as well as the Head Coach for the Varsity Dance Team.
What is the most rewarding aspect of teaching the performing arts to today's students?
I love working in the performing arts because of the values, lessons, and memories it instills in the kids. I think it's an experience that is so important and life-changing for so many students! Our annual Alma Dance Show features over 200 kids in grades 7-12 (both boys and girls) who are all coming together to put on an original show. They have the best time doing it. It teaches them responsibility, quick thinking, strategy, work ethic, and so much more.
What are your dreams for how your drama department can grow?
Our dance department has grown to have a huge impact on the community and has even brought kids to our school, which aids in our receiving state funding. I am very proud of the hard work these students and teachers put into our fine arts departments. The community recognizes and supports us as well!
Tell us a little bit about the production. What made you pick the show?
This show is an original story which started as a murder mystery and snowballed! It's a story about five secret agents who must uncover a mole in their midst and fight to apprehend the suspect while dodging their own capture.
What are the kids loving about the show?
The kids are so excited about the production elements of this show. Our set is giant. We have an awesome video board, extraordinary lighting, and props that are used in so many fun and creative ways.
What reactions do you expect to see in students when they see their name printed in this Playbill for the first time?
The kids are always thrilled to see their names, headshots, bios in the program, especially if this is their first time. The kids feel like they're famous when their picture is in a Playbill!
How has PLAYBILLDER impacted your performing arts program as a resource?
PLAYBILLDER has been a huge help when making our programs. It gives me the invaluable resource of structure and simplicity. Planning an entire show is hard enough. I don't need to figure out how to make a program as well. I love the simplicity, straight-forward approach and that it gives me the ability to be creative while making it my own!
