A pair of stage favorites will sing out on Netflix as part of the streaming service's first original, live-action musical, Jingle Jangle. According to Deadline, the cast will include Tony Award winners Phylicia Rashad and Anika Noni Rose.
Written and directed by David E. Talbert and produced by John Legend's Get Lifted Film Co., the movie is set during the holiday season as a toymaker and his granddaughter get to work on a magical invention that could potentially change their lives. The cast will also include Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (the most recent Broadway revival of Hughie), Emmy winner Keegan Michael Key (Broadway's Meteor Shower), and newcomer Madalen Mills.
A Raisin in the Sun Tony winner Rashad, who last appeared on the New York stage in the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, returns to her musical roots after making her Broadway debut in 1971's Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death and appearing in The Wiz, Dreamgirls, Into the Woods, and Jelly's Last Jam on Broadway. Rose, a Tony winner for Caroline, or Change, recently headlined the Off-Broadway revival of Carmen Jones. She shares some titles with Rashad on her résumé, having earned a Tony nod for a subsequent revival of A Raisin in the Sun and starred in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls.
The film is set to be released in 2020.
