Jonathan Groff, currently starring—and Tony nominated for his performance—as Franklin Shepard in the Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along, was honored with a Sardi's caricature May 21.
Groff made his Broadway debut in 2005 as an understudy, swing, and dance captain in Joseph Brooks' In My Life. The following year, he originated the role of Melchior in Spring Awakening on Broadway, which earned him his first Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.
After departing Spring Awakening in 2008, Groff performed in a multitude of projects Off-Broadway, on TV, and in film, notably appearing as recurring guest star Jesse St. James in Glee, voicing Kristoff in Disney's 2013 film Frozen, playing Craig Donner in Ryan Murphy's 2014 film adaptation of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart, and starring as the original Seymour in the long-running 2019 Off-Broadway Little Shop of Horrors revival.
Groff stepped into the role of King George III in Hamilton at The Public Theater in 2015, succeeding Brian d'Arcy James. Groff reprised his role for the musical's Broadway transfer, remaining with the production through April 2016. He received his second Tony nomination for his performance, this time for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, as well as a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his performance in the stage recording released on Disney+.
Groff starred as Franklin Shepard in the 2022 New York Theatre Workshop revival of Merrily We Roll Along before transferring with the production to Broadway.
